Submissions
We welcome unsolicited submissions of essays, reviews, and short notes. We also commission pieces for symposia.
What we publish
Short-form scholarship and criticism that treats a question in ethics seriously and writes for a reader who is intellectually curious but not necessarily a specialist. We avoid pieces that merely summarise the literature; we welcome pieces that take a position.
Length
Essays: 2,500–6,000 words. Reviews: 1,000–2,500 words. Notes and short interventions: up to 1,500 words.
Format
Plain text, Markdown, or Word. Footnotes rather than in-text citations. A short author bio (50 words) and institutional affiliation, if any. Images are welcome where they do real argumentative work; please confirm that you own or have licence to reproduce them.
How to submit
Send submissions and queries by post to the address in the footer of this page, or by telephone in advance of mailing. We aim to respond within eight weeks.
Peer review
Essays in the main section are read by at least two members of the editorial board and, where appropriate, an external reader. Reviews and notes are edited in-house.
Rights
Authors retain copyright in their work. We ask for a non-exclusive first-publication licence. Authors are free to reprint their pieces elsewhere with acknowledgement of first publication in C4eJ.
