About the journal
C4eJ is a journal of ethics in context — essays, symposia, reviews, and dialogues on philosophy, law, politics, culture, and the ethics of technology.
The journal was founded as the Centre for Ethics Journal — C4eJ for short — to publish short-form, peer-reviewed scholarship that takes moral and political questions seriously without wrapping them in jargon. Our subtitle, Ethics in Context, is meant literally: we think ethics is always embedded in history, institutions, and the particular lives we are trying to live well together.
We publish work by philosophers, legal scholars, political theorists, historians, artists, and practitioners. Pieces are typically between 1,500 and 6,000 words. Longer and shorter contributions are welcome when the argument requires it.
Scope
The journal's sections have historically included Essays, Symposia (coordinated collections around a single question), Reviews of books and exhibitions, editorial Notes, and occasional Dialogues between authors who disagree. We particularly welcome work that connects abstract ethical questions to concrete cases — in policy, in the professions, in art, and in everyday life.
Editorial stewardship
C4eJ began its life as the online organ of a university centre for ethics in Toronto. After a period of dormancy, the journal has been revived under new editorial stewardship. We have preserved the full archive of previously published work as metadata and links to the Internet Archive; we do not re-host the full text of older pieces without the authors' permission. Where authors or their literary estates wish to have their work made available here directly, we are happy to do so and acknowledge the original date of publication.
Citation
The journal uses a compact citation form that appears at the foot of every piece, for example: [2021 C4eJ 2]. That reads as "the second piece in the 2021 volume of C4eJ." Please use this form when citing pieces from the journal.
ISSN and publisher
The journal is registered under ISSN 2561-8342. The publisher of record is C4eJ — Ethics in Context, with the mailing address given in the footer of every page.
